Thirteen:

“I still don’t see why I am doing all of this and listening to commando-Barbie!”

Alex objected beside me, as we were both chopping enough wood to stock a legit fortress’ worth of hearths. I spared her a bemused look, any excuse to glance at her pristine smooth skin, and her supple curves.

Sleep had come for me, even if I rolled around for over an hour last night. With the distinct lack of kill-squad troopers on the lawn, it was fairly safe to assume that we had made a clean getaway.

Nina had a pair of well-worn but razor-sharp wood cutting axes for us. She just instructed us to chop wood until she returned.

“You realize this is a method of strength and endurance building?”

I asked as much as said. Alex gave me a scathing look and my heart galloped in my chest, even with that grumpy expression present.

“Obviously, it would not require three black-belts and a list of hand-to-hand courses longer than my arm, to learn about methods of building upper body-strength.”

Alex said without sounding like she was trying to brag or impress anyone. My memory was razor sharp from the previous day. Alex was every bit the expert she claimed and more!

“What got you hooked on martial arts training in the first place?”

Alex bit her lip and seemed to think for a moment.

“Partly as a rape deterrent, and partly because I hate yoga.”

She said in a serious tone. I knew how bad DC could be for a girl, so I could only surmise that New York was far worse. Cram that many males into such a confined space, and you can hardly expect anything other than savagery.

“Ditto to the yoga part, and well, I guess I just love the feeling of moving through my katas. I love the rush you get when you square off on the mat with someone.”

I blabbed to her, and Alex bobbed her head a few times.

“Yeah, battle-high, nothing like it. It’s much better when you’re on the job though. Nothing beats that rush.”

I hummed and nodded in agreement. Our departments might differ, but that statement was still true either way.

“Surprised you are not cracking a bunch of fed jokes at my expense.”

I confessed to her. Alex crinkled her nose and sniggered in an adorable manner.

“I’m saving those up for later. Besides, I think a girl deserves a break if she’s on the run and her peeps are shooting at her.”

I sobered up fast. Alex showed a flash of regret at her words. She sputtered and said, “SO… Sorry about that. I just say whatever I am thinking. It has ruined more than one date in my past!”

She confessed, and I bit my lip.

“It’s fine, I prefer direct people. Hell, my verbal diarrhea is much worse, you’ll figure that out soon enough.”

I cringed at my unladylike way of explaining my inability to keep my mouth shut. Alex chuckled at me and nodded again.

“I read your file, so I caught a few of the quotes. Like you apparently called one of your field agent superiors a ‘mega douche asshat’ while in the middle of a sting.
